I woke up gray at 3 p.m. 
from some bad dream
I couldn’t remember.

The weather was gray
on the cusp of December,
as I braved the cold
for a cup of coffee.

Midday traffic on 25th
was a gray abyss of footprints,
ferocious faces muttering catcalls,
too gray to even whistle.

when the sun goes away,
leaving me to gray addictions

“Batman in Danger”   November 1974: I’m running through our apartment in Greenwich Village, New York, with a blue cape fluttering behind me.
